What it is
Angelica root is the aromatic root material of Angelica archangelica, a tall perennial herb native from Greenland and Europe into western Siberia.
The plant has aromatic roots, leaves and fruits, but root oil and seed oil are not interchangeable materials.
What to notice
Angelica root can suggest:
- earthy root
- green herbs
- peppery freshness
- musk
- dry wood
- damp soil
- faintly sweet or vegetal depth
Published analyses of root oil have found monoterpenes such as alpha-pinene, 3-carene, limonene and phellandrene-family compounds among major constituents, though composition varies by source and harvest.
A musky root
Angelica root is particularly interesting because research has also identified macrocyclic lactones in the root oil. Those heavier molecules help explain why the material can carry a distinctive musky undertone beneath its green-rooty surface.
Root versus seed
Angelica seed oil can be brighter and more volatile, while root oil tends to feel deeper and earthier.
When a source simply says “angelica,” the archive should avoid assuming which plant part is meant.
