Frankincense

What it is

Frankincense, also called olibanum, is the aromatic oleo-gum-resin obtained from trees in the genus Boswellia. Boswellia sacra is one important source, but frankincense is not the product of a single species; several Boswellia species produce commercially or culturally important resins.

The resin is collected from the tree and allowed to harden into the familiar tears or lumps used as incense and as a raw material for extraction and perfumery.

• Raw resin tears can be heated or burned directly.
• Incense blends use frankincense for lift, resinous body and characteristic aromatic smoke.
• Essential oil captures a different slice of the material from the burned resin.
• Perfume compositions may use frankincense or olibanum materials to create effects ranging from bright and mineral to smoky, balsamic or church-incense-like.

What to notice

Frankincense is often more lifted than the word “resin” suggests. Depending on species, quality and preparation, it can show citrus-like brightness, piney or terpenic freshness, dry mineral facets, peppery lift and warmer balsamic depth.

Burning changes the experience substantially: the raw tears, distilled oil and smoke should be considered related but distinct reference points.

Origin and variation

Kew notes that Boswellia sacra is native to areas including northern Somalia, southwestern Oman and southern Yemen, while the wider frankincense trade draws on multiple Boswellia species. Origin and species therefore matter, particularly when comparing raw resins.
